Covering the latest Perth and Western Australia COVID-19 update for the week.

This week Western Australia has seen a surge in new COVID-19 cases due to crew members of the Patricia Oldendorff testing positive to COVID-19.

Since Monday there have been nine COVID-19 cases recorded in Western Australia, with the state peaking at 22 active cases on Thursday, October 1st.

Of those nine cases, eight are from crew members of the Patricia Oldendorff, the total number of cases associated with the vessel remains at 17, with seven infected crew still aboard the vessel.

The one other active case was a male in his 30s who travelled to Perth from India. He is in hotel quarantine.

Western Australia COVID-19 numbers

  • Total recoveries: 656
  • Active cases: 20

Since Monday 2,721 individuals have been swabbed in Western Australia.

There have been 425,925 COVID-19 tests performed in WA. Of those tested, 72,989 were from regional WA.

Easing of WA’s Hard Border

This week Mark McGowan announced from Monday, October 5, people coming to Western Australia from Victoria will be required to undertake 14 days of self-quarantine.

“This is a significant but reasonable change and it will help ease the demand on our hotel quarantine arrangements as our number of international arrivals of Australians returning home is expected to gradually increase over coming weeks.

World-leading research paper released into air travel transmission

Research into flight-associated transmission of COVID-19 led by Western Australian communicable disease control experts has been published this week.

This is the first published investigation to demonstrate flight-associated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in Australia and is among the first studies worldwide to use whole genome sequencing to support epidemiological findings in a flight transmission investigation.
