Last month I went to the Motley Crue Farewell Concert at Perth Arena. While not a huge fan, Alice Cooper was the support act, and what’s not to like about a man singing while an enormous python wraps around his neck? While Alice was great, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee provided the best drum solo ever … ever! It was part drum solo and part Cirque de Soleil act.
Three quarters of the way through the set the drum solo began and it was good. But then the whole drum kit started to lift up into the air. As drummer Tommy Lee kept belting it out, the whole drum kit started to rise up … and over …until at one stage Lee was upside down hovering over the audience.
The kit moved over towards us on a roller coaster apparatus that we’d been staring at throughout the night. We thought it would probably let off some fireworks, how wrong we were. Once on our side of the Arena Lee stopped for a moment to have a chat with us. Then he set off backwards to the stage.
That night as I lay awake at 1am still on a high I pondered …
It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to just about all the touring Cirque de Soleil shows, Lady Gaga and Pink concerts. Who would have thought of marrying rollercoaster rigging with a drum kit. Anything really is possible. Thank you Motley Crue for a top gig and an image that I’ll never forget. More photos on the blog.
