Latest Australia COVID-19 update sees Victoria’s COVID-19 cases continuing to spike with another 238 cases recorded today, the real worry is where many Victorians got the virus

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed today health authorities were not sure how 790 people with coronavirus were passed the disease.

It comes as the State continues through its six week hard lockdown, that’s prompted calls for clarity around what will happen next month when JobKeeper and JobSeeker expire.

Active cases now above 1,800

There are now between 1,800 and 2,000 active cases in Victoria, with the chief health officer Brett Sutton declaring “nothing was off the table” when it came to more restrictions.

Victoria is already finding itself back in the situation the country faced in March and April, but with a few key differences.

One of course is the Victorian cases numbers have surpassed its first wave, standing up the theories that second waves are typically worse than the first – as was the case in the Spanish Flu.

The other, is that the Federal Government has changed its tune on advice around masks. It has for months played down their effectiveness, even after the World Health Organisation last month ruled they were useful in curbing the spread of coronavirus.

But now, the Government is telling Victorians to wear mask where they can’t socially distance, though Health Minister Greg Hunt’s demonstration on live TV yesterday left something to be desired.

With more than 50 countries having made mask wearing in public compulsory, the question remains if such a ruling will be made in Victoria.

Death toll rises

A woman in her 90s was confirmed to have succumbed to the virus overnight in Victoria.

It brings the State’s death toll to 27 and the national toll to 111.

We send our best wishes, our thoughts and our prayers to her family,” Premier Andrews said.

“This will, of course, be a very difficult time for them.”

No AFL hub for Melbourne

Queensland has been chosen as the hub for footy for 2020.

That means all, yes all, Victorian teams will have to relocate to play.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan confirmed all 10 clubs would use the Queensland hub, with two at a time rotating to WA.

It’s going to cost the AFL about $3 million a week as the league tries to dodge COVID-19 hotspots and keep the season going.

Victorian outbreak responsible for Sydney clusters

Gladys Berejiklian warned NSW residents before the hard border closure with Victoria that it was likely the outbreak in their neighbouring state would spread to Sydner-siders.

And she was right.

While not up there with Victorian figures yet, NSW fears it’s on the edge of a second wave, with more than 30 cases confirmed this week already.

One of the main clusters originated at a work party at the Casula Hotel in south-west Sydney, where three people were infected by one man from Melbourne.

Those three went on to visit the Crossroads Hotel last week, spreading the virus further.
