Victoria records highest ever day of COVID-19 cases.

Latest Australia COVID-19 updates see the virus-plagued State of Victoria recorded 428 cases and 3 deaths in just 24 hours.

Australia’s case-load was higher than it’s been in months today, back up to 438.

But scarier still is that 428 of them were all from just one State – Victoria.

It’s the twelve day in a row the State has recorded triple digit infections, just six days into its hard lockdown.

There were also a further three deaths of people in their 70s, bringing the national death toll to 116.

The State’s total coronavirus cases have doubled to 5164 in just 12 days.

Restrictions could increase

Melbourne currently has the harshest lockdown in the country, with almost 4 million people barred from leaving their homes unless they need to shop for essential supplies, deliver care or study and work if not possible to do remotely.

However, this might not be the end of these restrictions.

Today, Premier Daniel Andrews said “if we get a sense, and if the data continues to tell us … that the strategy is not being as effective as quickly as we would like, we may have to go to new rules”.

What could this mean? Well for one, the mandatory rule that workers in aged care must wear face masks might extend to the whole city.

That’s right, mandatory face masks.

There might also be stricter restrictions on which workplaces can open, with a full shutdown of whole sectors “on the table”.

It comes as the country’s top medical association lobbies for stricter restrictions.

NSW also affected

The Victorian outbreak has also been linked to a cluster in NSW, with 42 people infected from one night at Casula Pub in Sydney’s south west.

Consequently, restrictions on pubs – such as the number of people allowed in at once – were enforced.

It meant the number of people per booking or per table went from a maximum of 20 to 10.

Today NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian extended those restrictions to restaurants and cafes, who will also be restricted from booking groups larger than 10.

Weddings and funerals will also be limited in numbers capped at 150 and 100 people respectively.

“They are emotional occasions where people know each other and that increases the risk of transmission,” Ms Berejiklian said.
