Southeast Asia has just become even more accessible with the launch of Philippine Airlines’ newest service: the first-ever non-stop connection between Perth and Manila.

Taking off on March 27th, the direct flight between the two capital cities is expected to take around seven hours. Without idly waiting for connecting flights, it’s a significant reduction in travel time.

“We are thrilled with this announcement. It is great to see Philippine Airlines cater to the increasing demand for travel to the Philippines from Australia,” the Philippine Department of Tourism’s Officer-in-Charge, Eleanor Palima, said.

“After delays caused by COVID, we are sure this service will be welcomed by West Australians seeking a unique travel experience in the Philippines.”

The flights are scheduled to depart Perth at 8:30 am and Manila at 12:05 am every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.

What to do in the Philippines

The Philippines takes pride in the fact it’s a cultural melting pot. Each region has its own quirks, dialects, and dishes, which have all been influenced by countries that once colonised the archipelago including Spain, Japan, and America.

Immerse yourself in the country’s history with a visit to Fort Santiago. Built by the Spanish as a defence fortress, Philippine national hero Jose Rizal was imprisoned there until his execution in 1896. Then, hop over to Corregidor Island. It’s maintained in honour of the Filipinos and Americans who lost their lives during World War II. The remains tell a moving story of the battle, and a guided tour will give all of the information about the history of the island.

Perhaps one of the reasons the Philippines is so well known is that it boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Even better: only a fraction of them considered ‘well-known’. Lay your towel down amongst the palms for a day of swimming, snorkelling, or relaxing.

With its mountainous terrain, the Philippines is also a haven for climbers and nature lovers. Scale the highest volcano and mountain in the country — Mount Apo, which stands at 2,954 metres — or visit the active Mayon Volcano on the island of Luzon.
