Latest Perth COVID-19 update from Premier Mark McGowan as he announced there will be no Perth Lockdown.
Perth was holding its breath overnight after three positive cases were confirmed on Saturday afternoon.
One of the cases was a security guard working at a quarantine hotel, the other two were his room mates.
It is the second quarantine leak in less than two weeks.
The man was infectious and walking around Perth on April 27 to 30.
So why no immediate lockdown?
Mark McGowan did not snap Perth into immediate lockdown after the cases were confirmed on Saturday.
His reasoning was that there had been less movement in Perth over the past week because of the lockdown enforced over the ANZAC Day long weekend.
“What has helped enormously is that, due to the interim restrictions we have had in place since Tuesday, they have significantly reduced movement in the community and everyone has been wearing masks,” he said on Saturday.
“That gives us some confidence that the risk of transmission is significantly lower than it would normally be.”
What changed overnight?
In a press conference on Sunday, Mr McGowan revealed the risk was low and he would not put Perth into lockdown.
He said 20 close contacts of the security guard were identified, of which 16 were categorised as “high risk”.
And information about the two room mates of the security guard also came to light.
Both worked shifts as food delivery drivers.
However, he said the the risk of delivery drivers passing on the virus was low because they were only at restaurants for such short times.
What now?
Restrictions mean no huge sporting event like the Western Derby scheduled to host 45,000 people tonight .
Nightclubs will also be closed.
“We cannot underestimate this virus. We cannot be complacent. We need to follow the health advice,” Mr McGowan said.
