WA Premier Mark McGowan has provided a Perth COVID-19 update following the National Cabinet meeting.

Following the meeting of the National Cabinet, WA Premier Mark McGowan has provided the latest Perth COVID-19 news.

Western Australia has recorded four new positive COVID 19 cases.

Two of those are returned travellers who are in hotel quarantine are flying in from different locations in Africa. The two others are from Queensland, a couple in their 30s who flew in from Brisbane on Sunday night.

Boxing Day Hard Border

Based on the latest health advice, Tasmania and the Northern Territory will be classified as ‘medium risk’ jurisdictions from 12:01am Sunday, 26 December.

“But today I’m announcing from 12:01am Boxing Day morning December 26 a hard border will be implemented with both the Northern Territory and Tasmania.” says Mr McGowan.

This means that the Northern Territory and Tasmania will join Queensland, South Australia and the ACT as medium risk jurisdictions.

Approved travellers arriving in WA from 12.01am Sunday, December 26, 2021 via Tasmania and Northern Territory must:

  • Double dose vaccinated against COVID-19, if eligible
  • Provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours prior to departure
  • Self-quarantine in a suitable premise for 14 days
  • Present for an initial COVID-19 test within 48 hours
  • Present for a COVID-19 test if any symptoms develop during quarantine
  • Present for a COVID-19 test on day 12 after arrival in WA.

Third Dose Required

There will also be changes to our vaccination program.

“Specifically in relation to third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will now be mandatory for all eligible workers covered by a vaccine.” says Mr McGowan.

This means the COVID-19 vaccine third dose, will become mandatory for all workers already required to receive the first two shots due to the rise of Omicron.

“The emergence of Omicron throughout the world and on the east coast is extremely concerning – case numbers are sky-rocketing as are the number of people in hospital.

“Vaccination is our best defence against this variant of concern as we prepare to ease border controls on February 5.”

On when individuals will be required to obtain the third dose, The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is set to make a decision on timeframes in coming days, currently, it is five months between the second and third dose.
