Last year I also wrote a piece on the State of Origin and it’s following in Perth, so I thought I would take another look 1 year later.

There is no denying that Western Australia will always be an AFL state, where West Coast and Freo rule supreme. However with the continue success of the NRL regular season games played at NIB and with Perth to host it’s first ever Rugby League Test Match when New Zealand takes on Australia in October – it is evident that the NRL has a solid and enthusiastic fan base in Perth. Also let’s not forget that Perth is in discussions to establish our own NRL team the West Coast Pirates.

Queensland and New South Wales go into a state of meltdown during Origin and while Western Australia will probably never be as excited as the East Coaster – we do actually care about State of Origin.

Update: 2016’s SOO Game 1 was the most watch of all time, with 2.7 million watching across Australia. However, only 98,000 people watched in Perth on GEM – beaten by shows like MasterChef, Seven News and Today Tonight.

If there was AFL State of Origin I think it’s fair to say WA would stop to watch it.
