So Perth Kolsch - Pirate Life Perth

Cheers To Spring With Launch Of So Perth Beer At Pirate Life Perth

Perfect for a spring afternoon.

Looking for a new frothy to wet your whistle this spring? We are here to tell you there is something new and thirst-crushing to raise your elbow to this spring.

Over the winter we have been working behind the scenes with Pirate Life Perth to create a beer that is spring in a glass – a sessional and easy-drinking beer that will have everyone tipping down a few cold ones. And while we might be biased – we think we have made the best Perth beer.

“It is exciting to bring the So Perth brand outside of the digital community and into the IRL community. This will hopefully be the start of many So Perth brand activations,” says So Perth Founder & CEO Adam Barrell.

About the So Perth X Pirate Life Perth beer

What type of beer is the So Pirate Life Perth beer?

We didn’t go for a lager which of course is an Aussie classic. And we didn’t go for a big thick pale ale or crafty XPA, we instead went for something that we knew would partner well with spring days in Perth.

Yes, for those playing at home, Kölsch isn’t a typical Western Australia, let alone Australian beer.

While it’s not quite a lager, the Kölsch has a similar flavour profile, but is brewed with an Ale Kölsch yeast. So effectively it’s got an extremely similar profile to the world’s most popular beer – lager and is sure to be a fan favourite on tap.

Tasting notes

Firstly let’s start with the brief from So Perth Founder and CEO Adam Barrell.

Kölsch… “it has to be something that is more sophisticated than a traditional lager but also something that is easy drinking.”

Pirate Life Perth Head Brewer Jackson Purser took the challenge and is excited for the drop;

“Doing collabs where people suggest classic styles is cool. We often get approached to do some of the craziest ideas, which is also cool… But it’s almost a point of difference when someone rocks up and wants a classic style.”

“The So Pirate Life Perth Kölsch is a crisp refreshing drop. A style already rich in quality we decided not to reinvent the wheel. We’ve gone with traditional German malts, noble hops and Kölsch yeast.”

Pouring pale hay with a fluffy head of foam, one can expect bready aromas, with pings of herbal, grassy notes from the Perle hops. On the palate, it’s clean and fresh, with notes of subtle biscuit, and a hint of honey late.”

Pairs well with: A hot AF sunny Perth afternoon.

How to get it?

The So Pirate Life Perth beer will be pouring at Pirate Life Perth from October 5th with $11 for schooners and $13 for pints.

Though for those who are So Perth followers and readers we have a treat for you.

So Perth punters can score a limited So Perth X Pirate Life Perth Kölsch for $7 a schooner and $10 a pint when you quote ‘So Perth Mates’ at the bar.

How long will it be available?

While we have had quite a few kegs filled – the beer will be available for as long as it lasts, which we anticipate won’t be that long. So make sure to get in sooner rather than later.

“This is the first Kölsch to be brewed out of Pirate Life Perth, and it’s a little banger. You’ll definitely find me smashing a few of these while soaking up the sunshine in the Pirate Life Perth alfresco,” says Andy Freeman, CEO of the hospitality operator behind Pirate Life Perth – Sneakers & Jeans.

Pirate Life was originally founded by Michael ‘MC’ Cameron, Jack Cameron, and Jared Proudfoot – all originally from Perth, who took the project to Adelaide five years ago for ease of distribution. Having since grown the brand into a national phenomenon, they partnered with Freeman and the Sneakers & Jeans crew for the opening of Pirate Life Perth in October 2021.

Talk about a Perth-centric collaboration.
