The Revelation Perth International Film Festival is on again from 1-11 July. If you’ve not heard of this festival (where have you been), the quickest way to explain it is to ask … “when was the last time you saw a cool t shirt with it’s own QR code and augmented reality”? Never? Correct. That’s the Rev Festival for you. Make sure you check it out.

Now in it’s 24th year the Festival showcases independent filmmakers from across the globe and around the corner.  You have a choice of documentaries, award-winning features and short films. Plus if you’re really into film there’s a series of workshops to fill your mind.

“We’ve got films about environmentalism, politics, sounds, coming of age and ageing, music and art. And a story about a fairground ride too! Things are getting exciting….”, said Jack Sargeant Program Director.

My tips for this year include:

Buy a T Shirt before they sell out

Not only is it a cool t shirt it’s sure to become a collectors item, with it’s unique QR code that makes the image on the shirt come to life. It’ll also mean you’re helping keep the festival going.

The Killing Of Two Lovers Review

I saw this film at the media night and have to say it has proved to be a bit divisive. It’s the story of a man trying to keep his family together after he and his wife separate. I found it to have a fascinating spine tingling minimalistic sound track, a twist that genuinely shocks and scares you, along with brilliantly realistic acting from the father and kids. Won’t be for everyone but might be for you.

A Night of Shorts

I love a good night of short films. At around 10 minutes each if you don’t like one film there’s another one on the way. It also gives you a taste of which directors to look out for. This year offers up 5 different types of shorts including: Australian Gothic Shorts; Experimental Showcase; and Sci-fi to name a few. If you’re feeling a bit like you’ve seen it all I highly recommend a night of shorts.

Other features films that sound interesting include:

I haven’t seen any of these but the write up sounds interestin: Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break; Out of the Blue; We’re Not Here To Fuck Spiders; The Night of The Beast; A Brixton Tale; and Bad Girls.

Documentaries of interest are:

These documentaries appear worth a look: All Light Everywhere; The Best Battles; Delia Derbyshire; The Most Beautiful Boy In The World; White Noises and Some Kind of Heaven.
