Breakfast is done and lunch time seems so far away…must be morning tea time!

You don’t have to wander far from the office in the CBD to track down a tasty treat. Here are a few lovely places in Perth City that I’ve found:

Small Print

Small Print

As someone who works at Brookfield Place there is something almost dangerous about the convenient proximity from the office of Small Print. It is a perfect little baked goods haven, discretely hidden away in the urban jungle and with a reputation that has the crowds pouring through the doors on a daily basis. Sure, you may just head there for a morning coffee, but it takes a lot of self-control not to leave with a little something-something. I am particularly partial to their divine mini lemon meringue pies (hard to stop at just one) and more recently discovered the joy of their choc chip cookies. Giant, full of chocolaty chunks and just heaven in a biscuit. With a range of freshly made cakes, cookies, slices and savoury options like pies and toasted sandwiches, there is plenty available to sort any mid-morning craving.

Location: Brookfield Place, 125 St Georges Terrace, Perth, WA, 6000

The Honeycake

The Honeycake_0

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling this entirely unique and thoroughly delicious cake at various markets and events around town, I am sure it would have been as pleasing to you as it was to me when a dedicated shopfront for The Honeycake appeared in the new State Building complex. It was great news indeed!

Selling just their signature Honeycake in a variety of sizes, it strikes me as the ideal mid-morning treat when you are in the mood for something a little more indulgent. Maybe you’ve ticked a major box for a project or finished a board presentation or even sent an important email, then celebrating with a slice…. or slab of The Honeycake for morning tea sounds like the perfect idea to me.

Location: State Buildings, Corner of St.Georges Terrace & Barrack Street, Perth CBD, 6000

Margaret River Chocolate Factory

Margaret River Chocolate Factory

Sometimes there isn’t always time to dash out of the office for morning tea, so it can be helpful to plan ahead and have a tasty stash of treats in your top drawer for when the situation demands it. Margaret River Chocolate Factory is the ideal place for chocoholics to stock up! There are various sized bags of choc buttons (the bigger the better) in milk, white or dark and an impressive array of flavoured blocks.

For the ultimate indulgence wander up to the display cabinet and pick out your ten favourites handmade truffles and box them up to go….decisions, decisions! You could go for Cafe Royal or Caramel Flower or Salted Caramel and it’s hard to say no to a Praline Heart….They actually also stock a range of sugar-free chocolate if such is your want. It was such a big win when a slice of the Margs Choc Factory moved to the CBD!

What Henry Saw

What Henry Saw

Vegans need morning tea too and What Henry Saw, tucked away on the artistically decorated Grand Lane, has got the sweet treats covered. They don’t have a kitchen on site but have some speciality stockists and offer decadent morning tea options for the Perth vegan set, including choc covered bliss balls in a variety of flavours, rich brownies, a multi-layered Snickers Cake (that looks seriously ah-mazing!) and even vegan donuts! It’s an impressive range and I am pleased that vegans are not having to miss out on morning tea indulgences in the CBD.

Sugarplum Sweets

Sugarplum Sweets

With a solid fan base from its first store in Wembley, the crowds followed when store number two opened in the CBD. In the shiny new State Buildings, Sugarplum Sweets offers a tempting array of baked treats.

Cupcakes are their main focus and I am a big fan of the lemon meringue option. With its whippy torched meringue peak it is pretty as a picture and along with the lemon curd centre it makes for a delicious mouthful. Plenty of other tempting flavours available too.

I spied several chocolaty selections that also looked right up my alley, which I will have to sample next time. Sugarplum also offers a great cupcake and coffee special for $6.50 on weekdays, if you needed any kind of excuse at all to find your way there, one morning soon.

La Veen Coffee and Kitchen

La Veen

I’m a long time La Veen fan, with visits tending to focus more on their lovely breakfast menu, but it is hard not to pause for a moment near the till and appreciate the entirely impressive range of fresh muffins, cookies and cakes, which they bake in house! Making a decision as to what to choose for morning tea is actually really difficult because there are so many tempting options.

I can vouch for the yum-ness (it’s a word I believe) of their raspberry white chocolate muffin, with an abundance of white choc buttons decorating the top and also dotted throughout. Mmmmm. With their wide selection you could easily wander to this King Street cafe every day and be sure that there will be something different and fabulous to try on each visit – gotta love choice and muffins, love them too.

The Wolf, The Bean, The Walnut

The Wolf, The Bean, The Walnut

It can be tricky sometimes if you adopt a certain diet to still find something special for morning tea, unless you make it yourself, but often there just isn’t the time. Fear not! The Wolf, The Bean, The Walnut have got you covered with plenty of gluten free, dairy free, even paleo options available. A quaint cafe on Wolf Lane, the friendly staff can hook you up with a range of interesting and healthier morning tea options.

To name a few there’s chia puddings, smoothies ready to grab in the fridge, gluten free muffins and paleo brownies, which as I discovered are pretty darn tasty. No reason for anyone to miss out on morning tea!

Milktooth Coffee Dealers

Milktooth

Milk Tooth Coffee serve up great coffees and regularly offer tasty toasties, bliss balls and banana bread, but on Thursdays there is the added bonus that they stock the ever popular Top Dup Donuts. If you’ve ever seen a happy snap on Instagram of a box of these donuts, freshly delivered, it looks like a work of art!

The actual donut is beautifully light, while they really bring their creative A-Game on the fillings front. So if you are planning your week ahead and want to chase down one of these donuts in the CBD then remember Thursday and remember Milktooth.

Jean Pierre Sancho (2 locations in the CBD)

Jean Pierre Sancho_0

With two locations in the CBD, Jean Pierre Sancho provides solid morning tea offerings in either store. Colourful macarons are a welcome addition to any office and the macarons are on point at JPS, with a rainbow of different flavours on offer. Plus if you buy a pack of six, then you can have one for every day of the working week and one spare for the boss – gotta keep them happy too! Other than marvellous macarons, JPS also offers a variety of decadent cakes, slices, beautiful bread and indulgently buttery and flaky croissants.

Everything is made fresh, from scratch each day and this bakery is also under the BuyWestEatBest banner, meaning they have a real focus on local ingredients for all their perfect patisseries, which is great.

Toastface Grillah

Toastface Grillah

If you want a toasted sandwich in the CBD then Toastface Grillah is arguably the first name that pops into many folk’s heads. The combination of relatively simple ingredients, prepared extremely well, makes for very memorable toasted sandwiches and the ones on offer at TG are just that. Is eating a whole toasted sandwich for morning tea perhaps a touch on the larger side? I guess it is, but you could always split it with a co-worker or it may well be just the ticket if you know you have a meeting over lunchtime and need something to tide you over.

You’ll be smiling all the way to the bank, I mean the meeting, with a belly full of Toastface Grillah toasted sandwich. I should add too that if you also need something sweet they do stock Mumma Sweet Lies’ slices and one has a whole Caramello Koala in it, so that’s another big win for this tasty venue.
