Costco Perth : first new store coming to Western Australia

Perth is getting a Costco.

US discount retail giant Costco is coming to Perth in 2020.

Plans are underway to build a massive Costco outlet on Perth Airport land, with the outlet opening in the next 2-years. The project still needs planning approval, however with Perth Airport on board, it’s likely it’ll go ahead.

The project is worth $55 million.

Costco customers pay a membership fee of around $60 per year for access to heavily discounted goods.

The Costco Perth outlet will, once approvals are in place, will generate hundreds of jobs.

The Costco Perth store would change Perth retail habits.

“We believe West Australians are going to embrace this new way of shopping,” Costco Aussie boss said.

“We are going to change Perth’s retail habits. It’s not a shopping trip to Costco, it’s a shopping experience,” he said.

The Costco retail revolution is set to roll into Perth with the announcement of a partnership with Perth Airport that will see a Costco Warehouse developed on the airport estate.

The new Costco will be a massive 14,000m2 of building area – more than three times the size of a normal supermarket, and will include an Optical Centre, Hearing Aid Centre, Tyre Centre, and a petrol station.

Perth Airport Chief Corporate Services Officer Debra Blaskett said Costco would revolutionise shopping in Perth.

“Costco delivers thousands of products – from day-to-day groceries to clothing and electronics – at heavily discounted prices for its members,” Ms Blaskett said.

“Costco needed somewhere that could provide space for their warehouse with connectivity to freight routes, and still be close and accessible to the shopping public from across Perth.

“Perth Airport ticked all those boxes. The new Costco will be just off Tonkin Highway, adjacent to the new DFO and close to the new Redcliffe rail station.

“Costco’s decision to invest at the Airport West Retail Park is a huge vote of confidence in Perth Airport and the WA economy.

“This $55 million project will generate up to 200 jobs during construction with up to 275 retail jobs created when it becomes operational.”

Costco Discount Membership costs about $60 per year, with massive discounts in store.

As of 2015, Costco was the second largest retailer in the world after Walmart, and as of 2016, Costco was the world’s largest retailer of choice and prime beef, organic foods, rotisserie chicken, and wine.

The company first opened in 1983 in Seattle, Washington.
