There’s a new kid on the block! After taking over the long-standing neighbourhood café on the corner of Mosman Park’s Gill and Solomon Streets, the team behind Pep’s Wine Bar and Stuart St. Cellars officially opened the doors to Gill St. Deli on Monday. The eatery’s latest iteration is the newest notch on husband and wife duo Charlie and Tarsh Galbally’s hospitality belt.

“When the opportunity to take over Gill St. Cafe was presented to us, the first thing we thought was ‘we are never doing another cafe,'” Tarsh Galbally said.

Charlie and Tarsh previously founded and owned fellow Perth cafés including The Daily in Swanbourne and The Other Side over a decade ago. The opening of Pep’s Wine Bar was a shift into a long-awaited passion project, a distinct side step from the café world.

After some consideration and with the added convenience of living in the neighbourhood, the Galbally’s came to the conclusion that they would revive the Gill St. corner location. The idea was to bring it back to its former glory and original use as a corner store and deli.

“We wanted to bring it back to its roots because it was originally a deli and corner store back in 1910. To us, it is all about creating a community, a place to gather, and get to know your neighbours,” Charlie said.

The deli produce is carefully selected to not only serve the basics, but also to support local small businesses and brands.

Pastries, sandwiches, and smoothies

Blow-ins and passers-by can expect everything from fresh pastries and house-made sandwiches, to breakfast buns and wraps. As well as muffins, smoothies, fresh juices, and salads.

The deli is also sourcing local honey and olive oil from Mosman Park, and eventually will invite local producers to present in-store tastings.

“The interest and support from locals and neighbours has been so encouraging. It has made us realise that the corner deli store vibe has been missing and people thrive with a meeting place. Plus, who doesn’t want to start their day with a really good coffee in a beautiful part of Mosman Park,” Tarsh said.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Open daily from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm, breakfast, lunch, and eventually, takeaway dinner meals will be the main focus. Alongside an advantageously placed deli fridge packed with cheeses, delicatessens, and meats.

“We want to offer delicious, healthy, and convenient meals for our local customers and regulars to make life easier for the busy families that live in the area,” Tarsh said.

It’s been a busy time for Tarsh and Charlie who also let us in on whispers of their upcoming Mosman Park pizza bar.

“With our other businesses so close by — Pep’s Wine Bar, Stuart St. Cellars, and eventually, Aggie’s (said pizza bar) — we are excited to eventually host some amazing collaborative events.”
