Serpentine Falls has been closed indefinitely after the detection of deadly ‘brain-eating’ bacteria.
One of Perth’s most popular swimming holes – Serpentine Falls has been closed for swimming by WA’s Parks and Wildlife Service, saying the water was unsafe to swim in.

Water sampling detected a bacteria, Naegleria Fowleri, which can cause an infection known as Amoebic meningitis.
What is Amoebic meningitis
Amoebic meningitis is rare, but can be a fatal disease.
Infection occurs where water is forced into a person’s nose at pressure from jumping, falling or diving into the water.
The following symptoms usually occur within 5 days of infection:
- severe and persistent headache
- high fever
- sore throat
- nausea
- vomiting
- neck stiffness
- confusion and hallucinations
- drowsiness
- coma
For now, one of Perth’s most popular swimming attractions will remain closed indefinitely.
