WA Premier Mark McGowan and Health Minister Roger Cook provide the latest Perth coronavirus update.

In the latest Perth coronavirus update – Perth has now reached 7 days without a new positive case of COVID-19.

“That’s now seven full days of no cases,” WA Premier Mark McGowan said.

While there has been no further recoveries from the 14 active cases from yesterday, this was expected by Health Minister Roger Cook due to our small number of confirmed cases left in the state.

WA Coronavirus Snapshot

  • 551 confirmed cases
  • 14 active cases in WA
  • 7 individuals are in hospital
  • 3 of which are in ICU

A WA roadmap of restrictions to be lifted won’t be announced until the weekend, possibly Sunday, once the National Cabinet’s baselines for Australia are announced on Friday. Mr McGowan did state though given our track record and performance compared to other states we should have more flexibility when it comes to the lifting of restrictions.

The restrictions that will have the lowest health risk and highest economic benefit will be the top priority which is further heightened by the growing unemployment rate in WA.

As of March unemployment in WA was at approximately 5.3%, this has surged to 10-11% and McGowan stated they need to do steps to bring this down.

When questioned about the hard border being lifted and timing on the restriction being lifted, McGowan was straight forward stating this will be the last thing to go. Mr McGowan said this is the one thing that can protect us the most as we manage our own processes internally and limit any external risks into the community and the AFL would not be exempt from this.
