AFLFreoHawks Review: Heartbreak as Fremantle Dockers drop out of the Premiership race

Hawthorn has become the first Victorian team in history to win a prelim final in WA and is on track for their third consecutive Grand Final win.

The Fremantle Dockers had a sensational start to the game on Friday night however, as Freo started to gain momentum, the Hawks responded.

Hawks Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Freo’s Nat Fyfe were three names that you would expect to impress, and they certainly did. Mitchell accrued a handy 35 possessions and Hodge made his presence known all around the ground. I thought Docker Michael Walters also played very well, kicking 3 goals and finishing with 21 touches.

It has come to light since Friday night that Fyfe fractured his leg during the first quarter of the game and continued to play until the final siren! What an absolute trooper, and an inspiration for the game. He managed to pull in 24 touches on a fractured fibula- how is that even possible? Fyfey is such a legend and I have so much respect for him. He is set to have surgery to have a plate inserted into his leg this week to help the healing process in what has been labelled “minor surgery”.

Despite Fyfe’s courageous efforts, and skipper Matt Pavlich’s REDICULOUS backwards/over the head goal, the boys in purple ran out of steam and the Hawks powered over the top of them in the last quarter.

The difference in the two teams is that Fremantle struggle to take opportunities when they present themselves, and the Hawks always take them. Fremantle make silly mistakes in crucial stages of the game, Hawks don’t make mistakes under pressure.

Hawthorn are such an experienced side, and it showed on Friday night. Their attacking ability was too much for the Fremantle defence. Hawks came very well prepared for the battle.

It was a sad ending to Fremantle’s best ever season. Nothing has been confirmed yet but I expect that this season was defender Luke McPharlin’s last, and possibly Matthew Pavlich’s as well.

Freo supporters can look forward to the possibility of Nat Fyfe becoming the Docker’s first Brownlow Medal winner, and be excited for bigger and better things to come from coach Ross Lyon next season. (Hopefully)
