Just days ago, Sora Café threw open its doors and if the proof is in the pudding, it’s already been popular with locals catching up for coffee and blow-ins stopping for brunch. Nestled on the Dunsborough foreshore, the atmosphere is bright and coastal, with a laid-back buzz that invites everyone to slow down and enjoy the moment.

The name translates to sky in Japanese and conch shell in Korean. Dunsborough locals and owners Anna and Steve Momsen said it was chosen to blend with the natural surroundings. Given the destination is an idyllic sunrise spot, they said the notion of the sky felt particularly fitting.

“Sora reflects a less is more philosophy. It’s focused on high-quality, locally sourced ingredients to create simple but well-crafted meals,” Anna and Steve said.

“We’re hoping our foreshore location will become a natural meeting point for everyone. Our airy, natural space sets us apart thanks to the large, curved windows and expansive sliding doors that let the surroundings and light flood in,” they said.

Sora is the third venue the husband and wife duo have opened. They’re also behind the immensely popular Merchant & Maker and Elski Danish Ice Creamery in Dunsborough

The story goes that when the opportunity arose to secure a space in the new foreshore building, they felt inspired to create a place that would harmoniously blend with the natural surroundings of Geographe Bay.

The concept of Sora began three years ago in conversations between Anna, Steve, and now Sora’s Manager and Head Chef, Daniel Lim. According to them, Daniel’s culinary and management background from Arrival Hall, Community Coffee, and Vinotto Wine Bar has played a crucial role in developing Sora and is the menu’s driving force.

A menu inspired by nature

“The menu is inspired by our beachside location. We wanted to keep it light and simple, showcasing local ingredients as much as possible. It draws from nostalgia and classic items with a minimalistic approach. By using a few high-quality ingredients, we allow their natural flavours to shine, creating dishes that are memorable and delicious.”

According to Anna and Steve, the homemade organic granola bowl and chicken salad sandwich have been winners. Alongside items like the bacon and egg roll and green bowl which features roasted vegetables, healthy greens, and seeded dukkah.

“We’re proud to support local South West producers and let their products take centre stage. We use Margaret River Farm House sausage and bacon. As well as gluten-free baked goods from our sister venue Elski Danish Ice Creamery. Seasonal vegetables are sourced from the Garden Basket in Margaret River. While free-range eggs are from Busselton, and the olive oil is from Wulura.”

If you’ve been to Dunsborough — and who hasn’t — you’ll be well aware of the beachside town’s incredible food scene. Anna and Steve hope that Sora becomes a natural addition, offering a one-of-a-kind space close to the ocean. A place you can visit whether you’re in the market for a quick pick-me-up or a relaxed meal in a serene and welcoming space, knowing Sora will provide just that.
