Latest Perth coronavirus update from Mark McGowan announces a $5.5 billion economic recovery plan for Western Australia.

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan today provided the latest Perth coronavirus update announcing a $5.5 billion economic plan for Western Australia as the state heads out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to announcing the $5.5 billion Western Australia Recovery plan Mr McGowan premised that the government and the economy was in a strong position pre-COVID.

“Prior to that, every economic indicator was heading the right way, unemployment was going down. Our state financial position was improving the investment situation was growing, the amount of new jobs created was going through the roof, everything was going well until COVID hit.”

Mr McGowan further emphasised that this recover plan is the most comprehensive recovery plan of any state in Australia.

“It provides a pipeline of jobs and work, and social initiatives for Western Australia, into the future. It’s a $5.5 billion investment in jobs and opportunities for our state $5.5 billion worth of COVID response initiatives and jobs initiatives to make sure we kickstart and reboot, our economy.” said Mr McGowan.

The ability for the government to implement such a significant recover plan is threefold.

Mr McGowan referenced the current low infection rates within Western Australia, the hard borders within Australia and overseas and the hard work done by the government in the past 3 years on the budget has allowed the government to provide a recovery plan that will help drive the state’s recovery.

Western Australia Recovery Plan – What’s included?

The $5.5 billion investment will create thousands of local jobs in important sectors, including:

  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Renewable energy
  • Education and training
  • Agriculture
  • Mining and conservation.

It also includes $2.77 billion of the immediate response already announced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perth record 2 new cases of COVID-19

Perth overnight saw a further 2 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed overnight both from overseas travellers and are both in hotel quarantine.

This means WA’s 7 day run of 0 new cases has come to an end.
