The cat’s out of the bag! Virgin Australia has announced that it plans to be the country’s first airline to allow pets to ride onboard. The move — which will have jet-setting pet-lovers rejoicing —  is subject to regulatory approval, and is expected to launch within 12 months.

Virgin Australia Group CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka said: “Overwhelmingly, our guests tell us they want to travel with their pets, and we are now on a journey to make that a reality. It’s something that commonly happens overseas and is proven to work well.”

“Almost 70% of Australian households have a pet, so this announcement is really significant for a large proportion of the country,” she said.

“It’s also a great thing for pet-friendly accommodation providers who will benefit greatly from increased connectivity and the ease for travellers to fly with their pets. It really will be a whole new economy for pet travel in Australia.”

When will pets be accepted on flights?

The project is subject to regulatory approval, but it’s expected the service will launch within the next 12 months. Virgin Australia will continue to offer pets to be transported as cargo through approved pet carrier services.

Which pets are allowed?

Whether or not your furry friend is allowed onboard will be dependent on the type of pet you own, its size and the route you’re travelling. Only small dogs and cats will be allowed onboard, and they must be able to fit comfortably in Virgin Australia approved pet carriers, stowed under the seat in front for the flight’s duration. The airline will also charge a fee for guests who are eligible to bring their pet onboard.

What if you have allergies?

Pets will be limited to a small number of designated rows. They also won’t be allowed to roam freely or sit on your lap for cuddles. So, if you’re not an animal fan, don’t worry, you’ll be able to book a seat far, far away.

According to Virgin Australia, the risk of allergy-triggering particles being circulated on-board is low. This is due to cabin airflow dynamics, the regular renewal of cabin air, and use of hospital grade HEPA filtration.

70% of Australians would travel with their pet

Most Australians vote in favour of pet-friendly flying. According to a survey Virgin Australia conducted in 2021, 85% giving in-cabin pet flights the thumbs up. The research also found that nearly 70% of people said they would travel with their pet in the cabin. 57% would fly more regularly if the option was available.
