The Perth Hills region is much-loved for its country charm and quiet surroundings, where small towns and quaint villages offer visitors (and locals) plenty to see and do in the way of historical sites, fresh produce and, of course, breathtaking landscapes to explore. The region’s many attractions include the well-known and the subtly hidden, and it’s all just 30 minutes from Perth’s CBD.

As the weather cools this autumn, the Perth Hills have plenty on offer for those visiting. Whether a short trip or an elaborate and lengthy stay, the region is the perfect place to slow down and truly indulge yourself.

Hike

If the Perth Hills could only be known for one thing, it would be the beautiful trails — and accompanying views — that meander through the region. From short, gentle strolls where rare and unique flora and fauna are on full display to multiple-day explorative experiences, there are more trails in the Perth Hills than could ever be explored by a single person.

Start out easy with a relaxed hike through a kilometre of bush landscape finishing at the flowing Serpentine Falls. The more experienced hiker might like to tackle the 14-kilometre round trip to Kitty’s Gorge, a moderate trail with plenty of picture-perfect scenes along the way.

If you imagine working up a hunger while out hiking, how about a guided tour that ends at an award-winning restaurant? Off The Beaten Track’s guided tours will take you on a journey through towering Jarrah forest and across rocky terrain before pulling up at Millbrook Winery in Jarrahdale for world-class wines and a two-course meal. It’s an all-encompassing, full-day experience for the senses.

Araluen Botanic Park in Roleystone might be more your style of indulgence if the rugged wilderness isn’t so much your thing. You can wander among the mesmerising backdrop of autumn’s golden hue at your own pace while exploring 14 hectares of manicured gardens or embark on a two-hour guided tour with The Hike Collective.

Picnic

On your visit to Araluen Botanic Park, bring a packed lunch for a relaxed, post-hike feed among the lush green gardens; it’s just one of many ideal spots for sun-soaked picnicking within the region.

In historic Kalamunda, guided picnics and tours from AmazingCo will take you on a journey through the many sights and scenes of the area. Whether you are a history buff, nature lover, or adventure seeker, there’s a tailored experience for all.

(Re)treat Yourself

Yoga in the Perth Hills

It’s not all about the great outdoors when visiting the Perth Hills; looking after yourself and relaxation can be on the cards, too, with plenty of experiences allowing you the space to unwind and reset.

If it’s a spa treatment you’re after — perhaps after a long day of hiking or biking — Amaroo Retreat and Spa in Mt Helena has you covered. There’s a range of treatments to try, some of the most popular being the 90-minute re-energising massage and an indulgent full-body treatment with facial and aromatic shower. Take your relaxation to another level and book an overnighter at their luxury accommodation.

For those wanting to connect with nature and gain a sense of nourishment, Restful Waters might just have what you’re looking for. Based in Bedfordale, the wellness centre is on an avocado orchard surrounded by water, wildlife, and plenty of fresh air. A variety of yoga and meditation classes are available here, along with full and multi-day retreats for total rejuvenation and connection with nature.

Wining And Dining

For some, relaxation is best achieved with a glass of wine in hand. Thankfully, there are plenty of options, such as a journey through the Bickley Valley Wine Trail, where you can enjoy a drink in the Perth Hills as you unwind. Accompany a good drop with a hearty meal, almost all of which utilise the region’s fresh local produce.

A visit to Darlington Estate Winery in the charming village of Darlington should be on the cards; it’s a family-run, 40-acre estate boasting an extensive list of wines and a polished modern menu. Select a glass to sip and settle in for a hearty sirloin with slow-roasted tomatoes or a plate of chicken, pancetta, and asparagus risotto with rolling vineyard and native bushland views — they’re particularly photo-worthy come autumn.

Of course, it’s not just vines and bushland in abundance in the region, but orchards, too. Core Cider House is a fourth-generation apple orchard in Pickering Brook with over 80 years of cider-making history behind it. Today, you can visit and enjoy a cider tasting, learn about the cider-making process, enjoy a meal in the Orchard Bistro, or while away an afternoon on the lawn with pizza and drinks.

Prefer to hike knowing you’re not straying too far from a comforting meal? The historic Noble Falls Tavern in Gidgegannup is well-placed to fill that need. Situated among untamed bushland and craggy ranges, Noble Falls Tavern is a pub with old-school charm, a simple offering and, of course, cold beer. Its car park is also the start and end point of a 3.5km hike from Noble Falls. Stop in for a bite and expect all the pub classics with good-hearted, friendly service.
